Texas Best Lobbyist News: Texas 83rd Legislative Session Bill Update

The following is a synopsis of recently filed bills in the 83rd session.

H.B. 625
By: Harper-Brown
Transportation
Committee Report (Unamended)

Recent texas legislation removed fines for driving a car without a license plate. It is clear that police officers need to be able to identify the owners and operators of cars in our state. The only way to ensure compliance with proper vehicle identification is to set fines for those driving without license plates. The transportation committee has ruled that this legislation is appropriate and grants no additional authority to police officers.

HB625 would place fines on operating vehicles without license plates not to exceed $200.

H.B. 695
By: Phillips
Transportation
Committee Report (Unamended)

Legislators can pass legislation that names portions of highways. The Texas Department of Transportation has the responsibility to create and maintain highway markers with these name designations, but is not required to do so without donated funds. Recently TxDOT has chosen to fund some of these highway names. This bill seeks to make the language of the legislation clearer and stronger, so that these highway signs are the financial responsibility of donors.

H.B. 767
By: King, Phil
Transportation
Committee Report (Unamended)

This bill seeks to strengthen penalties for the fraudulent issuing and use of disabled parking placards.
