Texas Best Lobbyist News: Gov. Perry’s Remarks at The Source for Women’s Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
The following is a digest of a story originally published at the Texas Governor’s website. The Texas Lobby Group is publishing this digest as a public service for Texas lobbyists, Texas Government officials and consultants, political consultants, and all other interested parties.
A few weeks back, Governor Rick Perry was present at the ribbon cutting ceremony of “The Source for Women of Spring Branch Medical Center”. Governor Perry also made a short speech, applauding the organization for it’s hard work in preventing abortions by providing alternative options. The medical center provides care for women throughout pregnancy and networks with adoption agencies. Texas takes abortion very seriously, with many of it’s citizens vigorously opposing it. The state has banned the use of state tax dollars going towards abortions or those who are affiliated with abortion providers. Rick Perry also cites a law that he signed, which requires a Doctor to perform a sonogram on a woman before allowing an abortion.
“Even with all the years we’ve spent working together to protect the unborn in our state, nearly 20 percent of Texas pregnancies are terminated. Every year, that’s nearly 80,000 lives lost. The tragedy of those statistics is magnified by the numbers of prospective moms and dads across Texas, who want nothing more than the chance to love a child they can call their own. I know of too many families that have been blessed and made whole by the glorious gift of adoption, to ever believe there can be such a thing as an unwanted child.”
The Source provides a listening ear, medical assistance, and options for women who may not feel they have anywhere else to turn. They are anti-abortion, and feel very strongly that many women are not aware of all the options available. The idea is to connect women with aid that ideally does not involve an abortion, although they do acknowledge that this is an option.
For over 30 years, The Source has been an active organization serving women in the Houston area. They offer medical services, therapeutic counseling, STD/STI information/screening, life enrichment courses, and reproductive health counseling. They proudly showcase the fact that in 2011 over 74% of their clients considering abortion decided to continue with their pregnancies. They receive a large amount of contributions from private donors and church organizations. With the latest addition to Spring Branch, The Source now boasts three locations in the greater Houston area.
