February 2012: United HealthCare Awarded State Contract in Texas
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas has lost the contract they held to provide administrative oversight for HealthSelect of Texas for over 30 years. In February of 2012, United HealthCare, a client of the Texas Lobby Group was awarded this contract. The Dallas Morning News has stated that UHC should save Texans 41 million dollars a year.
Blue Cross has suggested that the switch was politically motivated, but the Statesman has noted that a number of employee advocate services have looked into the contract change and believe the decision was made for sound reasons.
UHC will now be providing Texas employees with access to their network of doctors, hospitals, and other care providers.
The Austin American Statesman states that legislative and political director for the Texas State Employees Union, Derrick Osobase, has said that the ERS is known for doing thorough checking before making contract decisions such as this one.
